The Voice Season 2: The Blind Auditions #5

The Voice Season 2: The Blind Auditions #5

1) Whitney Myer - 25 - Reno, NV
"No One" (Alicia Keys)
Adam, Cee Lo, Blake, Christina
Team Adam

I really enjoyed Whitney. She had the "pop, soul, and funk" as she had advertised and Adam compared her to Mary J. Blige. I'm not so sure about Christina's comment about forgetting it was an Alicia Keys song but I do think, while I didn't buy into Adam's "you can win this whoe thing" selling point nonsense, I do think she picked the right coach. I did think she'd pick Adam too but I wasn't nearly as confident in my being right about that.

2) David Dunn - 27 - Midland, TX
"The Man Who Can't Be Moved"

I thought the self-described black sheep of an oil company head was actually pretty interesting. I liked his tone and control and I felt he had great pitch so I really couldn't understand why none of the judges turned their chairs around. His father didn't seem too confident in his life choices and he could have been a huge asset to one of the teams with the obviously very supportive female contigency.

3) The Shields Brothers - Rixeyville, VA
"Dancing With Myself" (Billy Idol)
Cee Lo
Team Cee Lo

I don't know about "needing to punched in the face with rock n' roll" but I certainly do think we need some rock n' roll. I didn't find their vocals to be terribly impressive but I did like their energy. I did get a kick out of their proclamation that coming from a family that lives on a farm with their parents, an opportunity on The Voice would give them a chance to not have to live on a farm with their parents. I do think that Cee Lo still might have diluted his team a bit but Cee Lo also, as Adam and Blake pointed out, could mold them into a better product. We finally have our first all male duo on The Voice too so that's nothing to look past.

4) Cheesa - 21- Honolulu, HI
"If I Were A Boy" (Beyonce)
Cee Lo
Team Cee Lo

I felt that she was the best singer up to this point in the audition round but she also might have been added to help get some of his stronger membes through the battle round. Either way I think it was a good pick up on Cee Lo's part.

5) Preston Shannon - 64 - Memphis, TN
"In The Midnight Hour" (Wilson Pickett)

I personally loved Preston's raspy vocals and his crisp guitar soloing and I think the show might regret not having an older presence like that on the show. Adam's "Shit!" outburst was exchoed by Preston himself. "My thoughts exactly." It wasn't just the age part though; I just think he was very interesting and it's too bad he didn't get a chair turned around.

6) Lex Land - 24 - Austin, TX
"I Can't Make You Love Me" (Bonnie Raitt)
Cee Lo, Adam, Blake
Team Blake

I have to admit that when I first heard her name that she sounded like a porn star. Cee Lo, probably buy a fraction, beat Adam to the button. Truth be told, I felt the song choice was too snoozy for me. It was hard to determine just how vocally gifted she was. She did prove to have some nice lower qualities in her voice but I agree with Christina that her voice just sounded too short-fused. Cee Lo was also quite dead on with his own analysis, which Adam echoed, and she did get more nervous after the chairs turned around. I actually felt that the judges did some of their best on-the-spot analyzing with Lex. I do wonder how well her nerves would hold up on the live shows. My money was on Adam getting the nod because I felt his sell job by a hair beat out Cee Lo's and Blake's but Lex decided to go with Blake. Blake's comment about three voices in one registered with Lex as she feels the same way and in the end that was the difference.

7) Orlando Napier - 25 - Los Angeles, CA
"Waiting On The World To Change"
Adam
Team Adam

The ex-con woke up and smelled the coffee well enough to get his act together and to hit the piano. I do think that if he were to advance to the live rounds, and successfully enlist his father on the tenor sax he plays in their band, that he could appeal to women but I just am unsure of his ceiling on the show. My gut tells me that he wouldn't make it out of the battle round. With Orlando on Team Adam, Adam filled his quota. Upon hearing clips of the full team back I somewhat changed my mind but I'm still not sure.

8) Cameron Novack - 28 - St. Louis, MO
"You Oughta Know" (Alanis Moirisette)

The "jack of all trades" musician talked about everything from hiip hop to opera but I also wondered if he was just too confident in his abilities. He did have a few rough patches and I'm not sure he really picked something that turly showed off the range he bragged about so I actually wasn't surprised he didn't showcase that more but I think his arrogant outlook on the process wouldn't have advanced him too far.

9) Lee Koch - 27 -Temecula, CA
"Like A Rolling Stone" (Bob Dylan)
Christina
Team Christina

I really didn't fee like Lee would have competed well come the battle round but Christina disagreed. She might have picked him to help advance her stronger talent but I would like to hear him sing something other than Bob Dylan and I'm not sure he quite has it in him to get past the battle round. Having said that, I personally found him interesting because he caters to some of my personal tastes but I don't decide who advances and wins these shows.

10) Wade - 18 - Harvest, AL
"Rehab" (Amy Winehouse)
Cee Lo
Team Cee Lo

He talked about the Al Green era of music but past my initial reaction, I wasn't terribly shocked that he chose to sing one of Amy Winehouse's songs. His voice did have a scracthy quality to it but I do love the fact that he was shrewd enough to pick something current but something along the same lines. Plus, it was great to hear somebody honor Amy Winehouse so recently after her tragic loss. I also think that he's in very capable hands and Cee Lo has arguably the strongest team in the competition.

11) Adley Stump - 22 - Tulsa, OK
"Last Name" (
Christina, Blake
Team Blake

I think she did a great job but with two judges already with full teams and her voice very powerful and strong but hardly dinstictive by country standards, it was tough to tell if anyone was going to turn around but both of the remaining eligible judges ended up doing just that. I did think that she would give Christina's team a much needed jolt of strong talent while Blake would obviously be very well suited with her being country. I do think Adley made the right call and I do think that Blake now has some really viable country options and he too also arguably the best team in the competition as well.

12) Beta - "You Make Me Feel" (No)

13) Aaron Gordon - "So Sick" (No)

14) Lana Lowe - "Last Friday Night" (No)

15) Sera Hill -24 - Atlanta, GA
"I'm Going Down"
Christian
Team Christina

With Team Christina looking like the most vulnerable of the four teams by far, sans a few of its members, it was up to Sera Hill to provide some much needed depth and winner's circle viability. However, this is The Voice and she is sining in the pimp spot. Fortunately for Christina, Sera desperately wanted to be on her team and lucky for Sera she was her only option at this point. So Christina picked up a much needed diva for her team. With the blind auditions done, Christina opted to sing a few bars with the last chosen singer. Sera might have gotten a thrill out of hearing her big inspiration sing with her but it was pretty clear how much her new mentor outshone her.
